History of the Argyll Arms
The Argyll Arms has been a presence in Bunessan Village for 3 centuries; The Argyll Arms records show that in 1780 the rent of a public house was 1 Guinea per annum. We do know that the owner of the Inn was Lachlan 'Ban' McLean ( 1751-1819) and was considered to be a excellent host and accompanied Johnson & Boswell when they visited the island on their way to Iona to provide clean bedding and meals. It appears that in the 19th century the Argyll Arms was a small inn comprising of a hut with one spare room and two indifferent beds within according to the reports of one disgruntled traveller.
The Argyll Arms has undergone many physical changes in the last century. Where the car park now stands used to be the hotel's garden and orchard, and the extension was added onto the side of the original stone building in the sixties which now houses the main bar with the accommodation above. The older part of the building, seen on the left side of the picture, is now predominately staff and owner accommodation and the attic, although refurbished, still has its original doors from the 1930s with room numbers still affixed. What is now the ladies lavatories on the ground floor used to be the staff room, and the gym on the far corner of the hotel in the photo used to be the small public bar. The gym is only about four years old. It is the only one on the Ross of Mull and very popular. All guests are welcome to use it during their stay. |
